How it works
A supplier quotes you by the tonne, your bill of materials is in metres. Or the other way round. This tool converts from the grade, the diameter and the wall thickness, then estimates what the volume represents as a load: number of containers, fill rate, and what is missing to reach a full container.
That last figure matters most. A volume that fills a container is bought at the mill, at mill price. A volume at half a container is bought differently — or consolidated.
Limits of this calculation
Frequently asked questions
- Why does the conversion depend on the grade?
- Because it depends on density. Titanium grade 2 is 4.51 against 7.98 for a 316L: at the same size, a metre of one does not weigh half a metre of the other. Density is read from our grade reference set, never approximated.
- Does the calculation account for packing?
- No. Bundles, dunnage, spacers and pallets take volume and weight that this theoretical calculation ignores. Allow a margin, and have the final load settled by your freight forwarder.
- What if I don't reach a full container?
- We consolidate. That is precisely the case where going through us changes the equation: you get mill price on a volume that would not justify buying direct.
